De Road to Indy is de ladder naar de IZOD IndyCar Series. Sinds begin dit jaar zijn de drie raceklassen U.S. F2000 National Championship, Star Mazda en Firestone Indy Lights daarin ondergebracht. Afgelopen weekend vonden op Road Atlanta en Homestead-Miami Speedway de finales van de juniorseries plaats. MotorRacingblog.nl sprak met de drie kampioenen van deze series. In deel twee van dit drieluik vertelt U.S. F2000 National Championship-kampioen Sage Karam exclusief aan ons over zijn beleving van het afgelopen seizoen en zijn toekomst.
Wat goed is komt snel
Hij is pas vijftien jaar oud, maar geldt nu al als een van Amerika’s grootste talenten. En terecht, want de overmacht waarmee Sage Karam het U.S. F2000 National Championship op zijn naam schreef, is ronduit indrukwekkend.
Na een jaar in Skip Barber National geracet te hebben, zet Michael Andretti zijn buurjongen in zijn nieuw opgezette U.S. F2000-team. Niemand weet voorafgaand aan de eerste race in St. Petersburg wat ze van die jonge knul kunnen verwachten, ook Karam niet. “Didn’t know what to expect,” zegt hij. “My parents were just worried about me putting it into the wall at St. Pete and
Het levert Karam dubbele winst in de Floridase stad op en geeft hem genoeg vertrouwen om van de overige tien races er nog zeven te winnen. En als dat nog niet genoeg bewijs is van de dominantie waarmee hij kampioen is geworden, mist hij slechts eenmaal de pole position.
Teamplayer
Patrick McKenna is in eerste instantie de grote concurrent van Karam. Maar na het eerste raceweekend krijgt Karam een teamgenoot, de eveneens vijftienjarige Zach Veach. Veach is een reizende ster in de Amerikaanse autosport, maar heeft wat moeite op snelheid te komen bij zijn nieuwe team. Maar met hulp van Karam komt het alsnog goed. “After the [New Jersey] race, Michael Andretti sat me down and explained the importance of being a good teammate. My teammate, Zach Veach, had limited formula racing experience coming into the season. So, my plan was to make Zach my toughest opponent and to beat him while he was at his best. Gevraagd naar de inbreng van Andretti Autosport in zijn success, is Karam duidelijk: “Andretti Autosport knows how to win. At Andretti Autosport, we control our destiny. The car is gone over repeatedly and parts were always being examined for wear. We didn’t have any equipment DNF’s due to the team’s fault. You must finish races if you are going to win a championship. Michael didn’t spare any effort with the crew and I worked with the same guys every race weekend, the faces never changed and we developed a great relationship. The last race was kinda like a bummer, almost saying goodbye to your family. The atmosphere was very professional and focused – no drama or nonsense.”
Star Mazda
Met de U.S. F2000-titel heeft Sage ook een seizoen in Star Mazda verdiend. Andretti Autosport maakt vanzelfsprekend ook de overstap naar het elf jaar oude kampioenschap van autofabrikant Mazda. Michael Andretti’s protege kijkt nu al uit naar zijn eerste
“The goal is to improve every outing. Obviously winning is the ultimate goal, but the result can’t take priority over the process. I think developing a relationship with whoever will be running my program – my crew – is key. I think eliminating distractions and learning what to focus on is important. I don’t want to waste time and energy on areas that aren’t essential to improving. I developed a lot of confidence with my crew chief, Poppy [Dave Popielarz], this year. I feel that relationship was another key in the championship.”
De lange termijn
Amerika is hongerig naar een nieuwe winnaar in de openwielracerij. Maar NASCAR ligt altijd op de loer om jonge talenten weg te kapen. Voor Sage Karam is de missie echter duidelijk: Kampioen worden in IndyCar, net als zijn mentor. Maar hij sluit niets uit.
