Road to Indy: De kampioenen – Deel 1: J.K. Vernay

De Road to Indy is de ladder naar de IZOD IndyCar Series. Sinds begin dit jaar zijn de drie raceklassen U.S. F2000 National Championship, Star Mazda en Firestone Indy Lights daarin ondergebracht. Afgelopen weekend vonden op Road Atlanta en Homestead-Miami Speedway de finales van de juniorseries plaats. MotorRacingblog.nl sprak met de drie kampioenen van deze series. In deel één van dit drieluik vertelt Firestone Indy Lights-kampioen J.K. Vernay exclusief aan ons over zijn beleving van het afgelopen seizoen en zijn toekomst.

Geen angst

Het verhaal van J.K. Vernay is een van de meest opzienbarende van de afgelopen jaren. Toen in december vorig jaar de vijf namen van het Red Bull Junior Team bekend werden, ontbrak die van Jean Karl Vernay. De Fransman was na een seizoen Formula 3 Euro Series waarin hij twee races won en als beste Signature het seizoen afsloot, gedumpt. Een flinke tegenslag, maar Vernay geeft de moed niet op. “Never,” antwoordt J.K., zoals zijn voornaam in de United States of America luidt, op de vraag of hij voor zijn carrière vreesde. “Red Bull gave a big support during two years in F3 Euro Series and I want to thank them first, but [to] be a race car driver is what I really want to do and it’s not that [what could] stop me.

“I really wanted to go to DTM with Audi and I did a test with them last January, but we didn’t found a deal. My other possibility to continue at a high level was to go to Japan or the USA and in the end, it was a good choice, even if to go to Japan was a great choice too.”

De redding komt uiteindelijk in de vorm van Sam Schmidt Motorsports. In februari test hij in Florida een Indy Lights-bolide en tekent nog geen week later een contract voor 2010. “They wanted to win the championship and they called three good drivers from Europe, [Esteban] Guerrieri, [Yelmer] Buurman and me. We all did a test in Miami on the oval and road track and they choose me. The team has had a big sponsor, Lucas Oil, and that’s why they were able to take a good driver with a small budget.”

Het doel voor het eerste jaar is ook al meteen duidelijk: Kampioen worden. Enkel talent kan Vernay in de autosport houden, geld om zich ergens binnen te kopen heeft hij niet. “When you don’t have money, you always have to win to go to the next [level] and even [though] we thought it will be difficult, the target was to win since the beginning of the year.

“We took the bet to come here in January and if I wanted to be competitive, I had to learn the car, the tires, all tracks really quickly to don’t lose too much points at the beginning of the championship. So it’s where I improve myself alot, to learn everything fast.”

Lang heeft Vernay, wie de 31 oktober 23 jaar wordt, er niet voor nodig om alles te leren; al in de seizoensopener in St. Petersburg wint hij in de straten van de Floridase stad, gevolgd door een dominant weekend in Baber Motorsports Park. De rest van het seizoen is Vernay onaantastbaar in het kampioenschap en winst nog drie races.

De volgende stap

“I am really proud about winning the Indy Light [championship],” geeft Vernay toe. “It’s like the GP2 in Europe. I am sure that this title will open me some doors for the future in America and maybe also in Europe but my goal is definitely to go to IndyCar next year.

“It’s really important for the series to show that the winner of Indy Lights [goes] directly to IndyCar. It’s the best way for them  to promote the series, I think, and to have more and more drivers in Indy Light for the next year.”

Zijn eigen kans om in 2011 IndyCars te racen, schat Vernay hoog in. Bij welk team hij verwacht te tekenen, wil hij nog niet zeggen, maar het is duidelijk dat dit aanstaande is. “Of course there [are] some good possibilities and we are working on it with my management company CJ Motorsport very hard. We are on a good way and I am sure that we will announce the deal soon. With who? You will have the news soon!”

Weet Europa nu ook weer wie hij is? Wel, Volkswagen is hem nog altijd niet vergeten en ook Audi heeft nog iets in petto voor hem. Maar eerst wil J.K. als Fransman de Nieuwe Wereld veroveren. “I still have a strong relation with [Volkswagen Motorsport director] Kris Nissen and Volkswagen Motorsport and have some news from Audi too. It’s quiet early in the season for them also to think about next year. But my goal is to go [race] the Big Car and to do the most famous race in the world…. The 500 Miles of Indianapolis!”
