Alonso snelste op regenachtige Hockenheimring

Op een regenachtig circuit van Hockenheim heeft Fernando Alonso de snelste tijd van de dag gereden in de vrije trainingen. Zijn teamgenoot Felipe Massa eindigde als tweede. Het Ferrari-duo werd gescheiden door Red Bull-coureur Sebastian Vettel. Lewis Hamilton crashte hard in de eerste vrije trainingen en eindigde slechts als zevende.

De snelste van de dag, Alonso, gaat er nog niet van uit dat dit een voorteken is voor de kwalificatie op het Duitse circuit. “We have seen before on Fridays that we are very competitive and then on Saturday, the Red Bulls are clearly quicker.” Hij denkt niet dat het huidige resultaat te herhalen is op zaterdag. “In order to be in front tomorrow, we will have to do something out of the ordinary.” Team manager Chris Dyer schat de situatie iets positiever in. “On a track like this, the gaps are shortened, so we can expect a very close fight tomorrow in qualifying,” zei de Brit na afloop van de vrijdag-trainingen.

Kampioenschapsleider Lewis Hamilton moet voorlopig nog maar hopen dat hij zich vooraan kan melden. Een crash in de eerste vrije trainingen, verkortte zijn tracktime aanzienlijk. “It was very slippery and I hit the limiter coming out of Turn Three, shifted gear, which spun the wheels, and had an oversteer moment. Itried to correct it and that put me onto the grass, where I was just a passenger. The accident took all four corners off the car, so I was a little bit upset with myself,” zei de wereldkampioen van 2009. Hij complimenteerde zijn monteurs dat zij zijn wagen in de tweede vrije trainingen nog opgebouwd kregen. “It was a huge amount of work for the guys, too, but they’ve just been phenomenal. It was positive to get back out there and overcome the difficulties I had in the morning.”

De sfeer in het Red Bull Racing-kamp lijkt op dit moment al minder prikkelbaar als op Silverstone. Sebastian Vettel was de snelste van de twee met de derde tijd. Hij hield een goed gevoel over aan het einde van de dag. “I think it’s looking quite good and the car feels good, especially in the last section.” Toch verwacht de Duitser dat het niet vanzelf gaat. “Ferrari looked extremely competitive; McLaren had a difficult day with only one car for the majority of running, but they will come back and be up there.”

‘s Ochtends was Adrian Sutil de snelste van het hele stel. “The first session was obviously very good. We went out on the extremes first of all and I could set some quick times and felt very confident in the conditions.” De Force India-coureur was slechts veertiende in de middagtrainingen. “The position is not really representative of where we are here and we know we can be much stronger. The long run pace was good and I have a positive feeling for tomorrow.”

De achterhoede-teams hebben ook een goede dag achter de rug. In de eerste vrije trainingen waren een aantal mannen sneller dan onder anderen Fernando Alonso en Michael Schumacher. In de tweede training was de prestatie van Timo Glock uitstekend te noemen. Het gat met zijn voorganger Jaime Alguersuari was minder dan een halve seconde. “We improved the car some more to end the day ahead of Lotus as the best of the new teams and within 0.2sec of Toro Rosso.” De Duitser in dienst van het Virgin Racing-team heeft ook vertrouwen in de rest van het weekend. “History has shown that we are strong at improving the car from Friday to Saturday and so I think we have a lot more to look forward to yet this weekend. It feels like the latest updates have given us another positive step forward for sure, so I’m optimistic about a good performance in front of my home crowd.”
