Het regende vandaag tijdens de kwalificatie in Maleisië en in die omstandigheden pakte Mercedes-coureur Lewis Hamilton de pole-position, zoals hij twee weken geleden ook al deed in Australië. Weer staat teamgenoot Nico Rosberg direct achter hem en weer kan hij een Red Bull zien als hij op de grid over zijn schouder kijkt. Het is nu echter Sebastian Vettel in plaats van Daniel Ricciardo. Opvallend in de kwalificatie was de botsing tussen Daniil Kvyat en Fernando Alonso.
“I didn’t see him, that’s the truth. I turned in and I only felt the hit, I didn’t even see him before he hit my car. I didn’t see a replay so I don’t know where he was coming from, if he was late braking I don’t know. For sure it was a surprise on the out-lap with these visibility conditions to have these kind of attacks”, zei Alonso, die suggereerde dat Kvyat iets minder agressief had moeten zijn. De Rus had een iets andere lezing: “It’s very simple. I thought he was letting me past. But in the end it’s OK.”
Vettel eindigde als tweede, maar het was aan het begin heel erg schrikken toen hij net als in Australië een softwareprobleem kreeg. “My heartbeat was rising very quickly in Q1 when we realised there was an issue. We came in and restarted the car, which seemed to solve the problem and after that it was fine.” Daarmee is het echter nog lang niet zeker dat hij er ook goed voorstaat voor de race, dus het is nog even afwachten wat de Duitser morgen kan uitrichten.
Williams heeft momenteel misschien de snelste auto op Mercedes na, maar in de regen is de FW36 lang niet zo goed, beseft ook Bottas, die zich als vijftiende kwalificeerde en als achttiende start na een straf voor het ophouden van Daniel Ricciardo. “The wet conditions highlight where our weaknesses are, so we have a clear direction for where we need to improve the car. I still think we have a chance of fighting for some points though if we have a dry race.”
